We are all different
A key tool we use to highlight this is the DiSC Workplace Profile. DiSC is a self-assessment tool used to improve work productivity, teamwork and communication. The DiSC model provides a common language people can use to understand themselves better and adapt their behaviour with others. In completing a profile, people are asked to answer a series of questions that produce a detailed report about their personality and behaviour. Their report will also give them tips related to working with people of other styles.
The four main styles are:
- Dominance: direct, strong-willed, and forceful (fast-paced and sceptical)
- Influence: sociable, talkative, and lively (fast-paced and accepting)
- Steadiness: gentle, accommodating, and soft-hearted (moderate-paced and accepting)
- Conscientiousness: private, analytical, and logical (moderate-paced and sceptical)
By understanding the differences in a team, everyone in an organisation can work and communicate more effectively. For example, for a dominant leader who needs action and results to understand their conscientious colleague needs time to provide a considered response, they can both be more patient and respectful.
