Our work is based on systems thinking - the process of understanding how systems influence one another within a complete entity or larger system. In nature, systems thinking examples include ecosystems in which various elements such as air, water, movement, plants and animals work together to survive or perish. In organisations, systems thinking consists of people, structures and processes that work together to make an organisation “healthy” or “unhealthy”.
Communication and Engagement
The number one reason for failure to implement is a failure to communicate the strategy effectively. This critical work is built into ADAPT. Firstly the strategy is banked in the Platform for everyone to access. And secondly, the regular rhythm of strategic work includes regular communications back to the team, as well as multiple opportunities for the team to provide inputs into objectives.
After every monthly Navigation meeting, the leadership team decides on important messages to take back to the broader team. This is an important part of being a coach. Make sure you allow the time to work with the customer at the end of each session to decide what and how they are going to communicate to the business.
Updates on the progress of objectives are captured in the platform and available to everyone. In between quarterly objective setting, anyone in the business can access the Platform for an update on the progress of objectives. It's good practice to capture notes and inputs on each objective, so progress is visible to all.
After annual and quarterly strategy sessions, the leadership team needs to communicate and celebrate wins and learnings from scoring the objectives with the rest of the business. They also need to communicate the next period’s objectives. What are we focusing on this quarter or this year?
Using Objectives to drive strategy
The introduction of Objectives and Key Results to a business brings focus, energy, alignment and accountability to implement strategy. Objectives and Key Results should be visible and shared with everyone in the business.
